The AUTOOL SDT smoke machine for vacuum leaks is a professional diagnostic tool designed to accurately locate leaks in automotive systems, including intake and exhaust pipes, fuel lines, turbochargers, and EVAP systems. By producing a thick, visible smoke, it makes even the tiniest leaks easy to spot, eliminating the guesswork of traditional methods. Compared to time-consuming disassembly or blind troubleshooting, smoke testing offers fast and precise results, improving repair efficiency.
Working Principle
AUTOOL DIY smoke leak detector adopts forced combustion and smoke generation in a low-oxygen environment. The heating wire is energized through conductive columns, rapidly heating to above 300°C, causing the mineral oil to reach its ignition point and enter a combustion state. Due to the small intake flow, there is insufficient oxygen to maintain complete combustion, so combustion primarily occurs on the surface of the heating wire. The mineral oil residues, under high-temperature heating, cannot fully combust around the heating wire, resulting in the production of a large amount of smoke.

How to Choose SDT Series Car Vacuum Leak Detector?
Choose the SDT208, which features dual pressure modes: high pressure mode (35 psi) and low pressure mode (10 psi).
You can choose the SDT101 or SDT103, both designed specifically for EVAP systems and ideal for low-pressure tests (around 3.2 kPa). Please note, these models do not have a built-in air pump and must be connected to an external air compressor.
If you prefer a model with a built-in air pump, we recommend the SDT60.
Please choose SDT205, SDT205S, SDT206, SDT208, they all have dual-mode output of air mode + smoke mode.
we recommend AUTOOL SDT206 with built-in dual pumps for fast smoke output, or SDT208 with dual pressure/power modes and high airflow for greater flexibility.
We don’t recommend using a vacuum smoke tester for residential AC duct leak checks, as the duct openings have poor sealing.
Due to logistics restrictions, we are unable to include testing oil in the package. You can easily buy liquid paraffin or baby oil locally for use as the testing fluid.
⚠️ Must Read Before Use
- Each use only requires about 15-20ml of baby oil. Please avoid adding an excessive amount of test oil at one time, as it will occupy the internal space needed for smoke generation and cause the machine to fail to produce smoke normally.
- Please note that the SDT series requires the connection of a 12V battery.
- Do not run the detector for over 8 minutes continuously. It needs interval rest.
🔔 Warm Tips
- Only the SDT101 and SDT103 models do not have built-in air pumps and require connection to an air compressor. If you need a model with a built-in air pump for direct use, please select other models.

How To Use The AUTOOL SDT Series Car Vacuum Leak Detector?
Note: Please connect an air compressor when using SDT101 or SDT103
- Step 1: Fill 10-15ml baby oil into the detector for the first time. Open the engine cover, and hang the detector in the cover.
- Step 2: Disconnect the pipe that needs to be connected to the detector.
- Step 3: Connect the detector with the DC12V battery, turn on the power switch, and the detector starts to work.
- Step 4: The pipe fills with smoke within 30 seconds, check for leaks. Check the leak points. Please use a headlamp if necessary.

FAQs
- Case 1:Using the wrong test oil or adding too much test oilWe recommend using Johnson’s baby oil. For the first use, add 15-20 ml. Adding too much smoke oil can prevent smoke from being produced or cause liquid to spray out. Please empty all the smoke oil inside, reconnect the power, and power it on. If smoke starts to come out, add another 10 ml of smoke oil.
- Case 2:The heating cotton is burnt or the mainboard is damagedPlease use a multimeter to measure the voltage to determine the cause. If the voltage is normal, open the machine’s casing and measure the voltage at the heating element. If there is no voltage, the motherboard or temperature sensor is faulty, and you will need to replace both components. If the heating element receives a normal 12V input, the heating cotton has burned out, and we will provide a new heating cotton for replacement.
- Please first check whether the battery clamp wires are supplying power to the smoke leak detector. Use a multi-meter to test the continuity of the clamp wires. Then open the machine’s casing and check whether the internal motherboard has both input and output voltage. If voltage enters the motherboard, the motherboard is faulty, and you need to replace it to fix the problem.
- Please first help check whether the flow meter ball valve on the SDT103 can move freely and operate normally. If the ball valve can move, the pressure-reducing valve inside is faulty and blocks the gas supply. If the flow meter ball valve is stuck and cannot move, you need to repair or replace the flow meter. We will send you a new flow meter to restore normal smoke output.
- My sincere apology for this problem. This situation mainly occurs for three reasons: pump failure, smoke oil failure, or atomization system failure. To solve the issue, you can block the smoke duct with your hand to check if the pressure pointer rises. If it rises, which represents the pump can work normally. Then drain all the smoke oil out and add 10 ml new smoke oil. Keep the machine’s oil filling port open, then turn on the equipment and observe whether smoke comes out of the filling port. If smoke appears, tighten the fuel cap, and the equipment will function normally. If you have any other questions or concerns during use, please feel free to contact us anytime.
- The pressure gauge on the smoke leak detector has two main functions:First, it is used for machine self-check. You can block the smoke hose and observe whether the pressure gauge changes to determine whether the device is functioning normally;
Second, before turning on the smoke switch, the customer can preliminarily determine whether the tested pipeline system has a leak by observing the movement of the pressure gauge needle.
If the tested pipeline has a significant leak, the pressure gauge needle will remain at zero. If the needle rises slowly but not significantly, this indicates there is a leak in the system.
At this point, you can turn on the smoke switch to introduce smoke generated by the device into the tested pipeline system, allowing you to locate the leak and perform repairs.
