Mercedes-AMG Is Cooking Up a New-Generation V-8 Powertrain

Mercedes-AMG has officially announced the development of a “high-tech electrified V8” engine, which will power high-performance models built on the brand’s new AMG.EA architecture. Meanwhile, the 6.0L twin-turbocharged V12 engine will continue to be available, but only in select markets.
V8 Transition: Customer Loss but a Step Toward Sustainability
In a recent interview, Mercedes-AMG CEO Philipp Schiemer admitted that the gradual phase-out of V8 engines has resulted in the loss of some loyal customers. However, he emphasized that this shift is a crucial step for the brand toward electrification and sustainability.
AMG to Redefine the Performance Market in 2026
Starting in 2026, Mercedes-AMG plans to surpass the current performance market landscape with a series of new models, with the next-gen high-tech electrified V8 powertrain at the core of this transformation. This signifies AMG’s commitment to delivering a balance of performance and environmental responsibility in the era of electrification.
What Does Electrification Mean?
It remains unclear what exactly “electrification” means in the context of the “next-generation high-tech electrified V8” engine. Is it a completely new design, or an upgrade of the existing hybrid 4.0L V8? Another key question is battery capacity. Mercedes could stick with the widely used 48V mild-hybrid system, or opt for a larger battery with a plug-in hybrid configuration. What is certain is that this engine will be used on the AMG.EA platform, coexisting with high-performance fully electric models.
The Future of the V12 Engine
Mercedes has confirmed that the 6.0L V12 engine will remain in production. However, while the new V8 is being developed to meet strict EU emissions regulations, the V12 will only be available in select markets.
